Background of the Study

Accounting information plays a fundamental role in financial decision-making by providing key insights into the financial health of a business. Accurate and reliable financial data enables managers to make informed decisions about resource allocation, investment strategies, budgeting, and risk management (Olalekan & Okoro, 2024). In Kogi State, as in many other regions, businesses rely heavily on accounting information for planning and decision-making, particularly in an environment characterized by limited access to external financial resources and high uncertainty.

Accounting information, such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, provides the necessary foundation for evaluating business performance and making strategic decisions. In Kogi State, many businesses, particularly SMEs, may not have access to professional accounting services or may lack the capacity to interpret financial data effectively, leading to suboptimal decision-making and inefficiencies. This study aims to explore the role of accounting information in financial decision-making processes among businesses in Kogi State and evaluate how it influences their operational and financial outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of accounting information in financial decision-making, many businesses in Kogi State still face challenges in utilizing this data effectively. Limited financial literacy, poor accounting practices, and lack of access to qualified accountants often result in business owners making decisions based on incomplete or inaccurate financial information. These challenges hinder effective financial planning and strategic decision-making, ultimately affecting business performance and growth. This study seeks to investigate how accounting information is used in financial decision-making by businesses in Kogi State and assess its impact on business outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the use of accounting information in financial decision-making by businesses in Kogi State.

2. To assess the impact of accounting information on business performance and decision-making in Kogi State.

3. To recommend strategies for improving the use of accounting information to enhance business decision-making in Kogi State.

Research Questions

1. How is accounting information used in financial decision-making by businesses in Kogi State?

2. What is the impact of accounting information on business performance and decision-making in Kogi State?

3. What strategies can businesses in Kogi State adopt to improve the use of accounting information in financial decision-making?

Research Hypotheses

1. Accounting information significantly influences the financial decision-making process in businesses in Kogi State.

2. Businesses that effectively use accounting information make better financial decisions and perform better than those that do not in Kogi State.

3. Improving the use of accounting information will lead to better decision-making and improved business performance in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on SMEs in Kogi State and will explore how they utilize accounting information for financial decision-making. A limitation of the study is that it may not account for the diverse ways in which businesses may use accounting information or for the broader institutional challenges, such as lack of access to technology or accounting services.
